The City of Gilroy is pleased to announce that outdoor dining furniture is now available for local Gilroy restaurants.
We recognize that the COVID-19 Pandemic has significantly stalled business development in Gilroy. It is the desire of the City Council to support local restaurant businesses in creating new outdoor dining spaces, which are now critical to the success of restaurants and foodservice operations. The Gilroy City Council has directed staff to purchase $20,000 of outdoor dining furniture and to make this furniture available to local Gilroy restaurants. At this time tables and chairs are being packaged and shipped to the City from three different states. Delivery for all sets of furniture is scheduled for this Friday, July 10. The furniture will be delivered and stored at the City Annex on Church Street in the Civic Plaza. In order to manage and track the release of furniture to local Gilroy restaurants an online, digital-only application will be posted to our website beginning Wednesday, July 8 at 8 am.

The application itself is fairly simple requiring only basic contact information. Staff will use this information to coordinate with the applicant and verify that they are a local restaurant within the city limits. Furniture will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis until assets are depleted, there are a total of 60 tables and 120 chairs available. It is expected that a restaurant will apply for an amount between one and four sets, or no more than they reasonably need for the dimensions of their outdoor space. Restaurants should expect the following order of events:
1. Restaurants will start by applying for the grant, opening July 8, 2020, at 8 am
2. Within two business days, applicants may receive a grant reservation, if approved
3. Restaurants will then pick-up the reserved furniture from the City Annex at a mutually agreed upon time.
4. Restaurants will be required to assemble the furniture at their place of business.
For restaurant owners, the City is providing outdoor dining furniture, which would allow customers to patronize the business as the County’s Health Order currently allows only outdoor dining. For local governments, the potential benefit includes inducing municipal sales tax revenues, which are crucial for maintaining essential services such as police and fire, as well as other County and State emergency services. The aim of the Outdoor Dining Furniture Program is to provide a mutually beneficial service to all economic stakeholders in the City of Gilroy’s commercial districts. By helping create a safe place to dine, while socially-distancing, there may be a moderate increase in economic synergy for commercial districts.
We hope to see many businesses apply and we look forward to working with you to increase economic opportunity and improve our City.
