Help Protect Our Pipes

Image of Fats, Oils, and Grease

Official Flyer

The Holidays are just around the corner and a clogged drain is probably the last thing any household wants to experience during this time.

The City of Gilroy would like to remind residents that FOG – Fats, Oils, and Grease – should not be poured down the drain (intentionally or unintentionally). When grease gets into sewers it can harden and build up, causing blockages in public sewer lines and even in home plumbing. This can cause major sewage backups or a buildup in your pipes and city pipes, leading to costly repairs for homeowners and the City of Gilroy, at the worst time.

Dispose  of fats, oils and grease properly with three easy steps:

  • Can it. Once cooled, pour leftover oils and grease into a sturdy container, like a jar or coffee can.
  • Scrape it. Before washing pots and pans, scrape out fats, oils and grease.
  • Trash it. Put fatty and greasy food scraps as well as the container with the leftover oils and fats in the garbage, not down the drain.

For large amounts of cooking oil – like what’s needed for deep fried turkeys – pour the cooled liquid oil back into gallon jugs and make sure the lid is screwed. Make an appointment and take it to the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste program along with your other household chemicals. https://www.sccgov.org/sites/rwr/hhw/Pages/hhw.aspx
