Gilroy Police Make an Arrest in Connection to Shooting
Sunday, October 31, 2021 (Gilroy, CA): On October 30, 2021, at approximately 4:15 p.m., members of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill Regional SWAT team served a search warrant at a residence on the 7100 block of Church Street in Gilroy. The SWAT team arrested Benjamin David Calderon, a 19-year-old Gilroy resident, in connection to the shooting that occurred on the 400 block of Las Animas Avenue, where four victims were shot. The victims’ ages range from 17 to 19 years. Calderon was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for homicide.
On Saturday, October 30, 2021, at approximately 12:55 a.m., Gilroy Police received a 9-1-1 call of a shooting on the 400 block of Las Animas Avenue in Gilroy. When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a large outdoor party at the residence. Officers learned that an altercation occurred just prior to their arrival, and at least one suspect fired a gun. Officers determined there were a total of four shooting victims during the altercation. One male victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other victims were transported to local hospitals, two with life-threatening injuries. The location of the altercation was determined to be the residence of Gilroy City Council Member Rebeca Armendariz.
This incident is being actively investigated by the Gilroy Police Department’s Investigations Bureau and Crime Scene Investigations.
