[ARCHIVED] Create Defensible Space

If you’ve got knee-high weeds or tall grass, it’s time to get to work.

With the days getting longer and warmer, fire season is on its way. To protect your family and your property, the Gilroy Fire Marshal is urging the community to remove all dead plants, grass, and weeds within 30 feet of your home or business.

To further protect your property, trim bushes, remove combustible debris, trim tree branches to at least 10 feet from your home or business, and clear leaves, pine needles, and debris from your roof and gutters.

If you need to use power equipment in a dry grass area, please limit that use to 10:00 AM to avoid causing a spark or starting a wildfire.

These activities are part of “weed abatement” and must be completed by May 15, 2023. After the May 15 deadline, Santa Clara County will begin property inspections and, if necessary, will order the necessary abatement work and send the property owner a 15-day courtesy weed abatement notice.

Thank you for helping our Gilroy Firefighters protect your family and your property.
